Crepuscolo

Cycles are everywhere in nature. The water that evaporates from an alpine lake to fall as rain in the forest around it. The fragrant blooming flowers of Spring and the musky-sweet decaying leaves of Fall. Each day in nature has its own cycle. The gentle illumination of early morning. The brilliant, radiant light of midday. The aureate glow as the sun comes to rest on the horizon. The soft hues of twilight that slowly darken.

This glorious lingering eventide. I feel each passing emotion of the sky as its warm colours cool. I feel grateful for the day, yet sad for its end. Watching this uncertain light as it vanishes before me despite my best efforts. My pupils dilate. I watch as the details in the trees meld together and become a single dark form below a violet, indigo then cobalt sky. Not ready to leave, I wish for twinkling stars as an excuse to stay.

I photograph this light to pay my respects. To witness, at peace, the closure of this day. To gaze, unwavering, at these final moments before the fading sky becomes fully dark.
