Is it just me, or does the entire island of Ireland look and feel like the set of a fairytale? If you’ve ever been, you know that Ireland is truly enchanted. On this visit, I based my week-long stay in Dublin then travelled around the country as much as I could.
From the Cliffs of Moher on the West Coast, to Glendalough in County Wicklow to the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge and Giant’s Causeway on the North Coast, and the many magical villages and towns along the way, I met incredible people, ate glorious food and breathed the freshest air I’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing. Here are my top picks for the 5 most beautiful views in Ireland:
1 Sally Gap
Sally Gap is a truly gorgeous pass through the Wicklow Mountains in Country Wicklow, Republic of Ireland. Located about 45 minutes outside of Dublin, it offers stunning vistas of moors, bogs and hills covered in beautiful and fragrant gorse and heather.
2 Cliffs of Moher
The windswept Cliffs of Moher in County Clare, Republic of Ireland, tower 214 m (700 ft) tall, running for 14 km (9 miles) along the west coast and offering spectacular views over the Atlantic Ocean below.
3 Glendalough
Glendalough is a beautiful glacial valley in County Wicklow, Republic of Ireland, that offers gorgeous views of lakes, mountains, and pasture surrounding an important early medieval monastic settlement founded by St Kevin in the 6th century. Rapunzel may be a German fairy tale, but The Round Tower of Glendalough will definitely have your eyes searching for dangling braids.
4 Giant’s Causeway
“We is in Dream Country” said the BFG. The Giant’s Causeway in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, is a spectacular formation of over 40,000 naturally occurring, interlocking basalt columns that legend has it was constructed by mythical Irish giant Finn MacCool to reach Scotland and battle his rival, Benandonner.
Although this rock formation is undeniably a natural feature resulting from volcanic activity over 50 million years ago, this UNESCO World Heritage site is so truly extraordinary that it’s easy to lose yourself and believe that the tales are true — imagining that this path of hexagonal columns was indeed built by giants. Dream country for sure.
5 Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge
My final pick is for the beautiful outlook at the bridge of Carrick-a-Rede in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, connecting the mainland to a tiny island once used for casting by salmon fishermen.
In fact, fishermen have been building and rebuilding a bridge in this location for over 350 years. Looking out over the cliffs towards Ballintoy and feeling the fresh salt air of the North Channel fill your lungs, there is no doubt it is a top view worthy of this list.
It was hard to narrow this list down to just 5 locations as Ireland is full of gorgeous views and every time I return, I find a new favourite. Ireland has some kind of magic that holds a piece of your heart and keeps you longing to experience more.
